How to Format an SD Card on Windows OS
An SD card is a digital storage device that is used by a plethora of portable devices including digital camcorders, cell phones, camcorders because of its light weight and small size. In order to make the SD card compatible with the device that you are using, you need to format it.
Safety note: Formatting of the SD, Micro SD or any other memory cards enhances its overall performance in terms of speed and functionality. By any chance, if you happen to lose data; here is an easy way to perform formatted Micro SD card recovery.
Here are step-by-step instructions on how to format SD card using Windows
Step 1: Connect the SD card to your Windows PC
Insert the SD card directly into the built-in SD card port or use external USB card reader that connects to any USB port on your Windows PC. You can even link a portable device to your computer via USB cable.
Step 2: Open the computer window
Click Start menu and select Computer icon (Windows Vista/7) or My Computer (Windows XP). For Windows 8/10 users, type computer in the Run Command and select Computer tab in the Apps search results.
Step 3: Locate the removable disk representing your SD card
Navigate to the list of removable storage devices into your system and find the SD memory card drive that is connected to your PC.
Step 4: Format the SD card
Right-click the connected SD card and click on Format button. In the Format window, set to default “Capacity” and “Allocation unit size”.
Step 5: Choose the file system
Select FAT32 as the default file system for smaller SD cards and for larger cards you should choose ExFAT. This will allow it to be ready by phones, cameras, Windows, Mac and more.
Sep 6: Confirm your selection
A warning pop-up stating all of the data on the drive will be erases appears on-screen after you click the Start icon. Click OK to continue.
Your SD card will now be formatted.
Note: If the SD card is write protected, first follow these instructions and then format the SD card using the above-mentioned steps:
- Right-click the Start menu and open Command Prompt
- Type diskpart and hit Enter key
- Enter list disk and click Enter
- Type select disk n (Here “n” is the number of disk for the SD memory card)
- Enter attributes disk clear readonly and press Enter
- Type clean and click Enter button
- To exit diskpart, enter exit and hit Enter key
